Amigurumi Spaghetti and Meatballs Crochet Pattern

by | All Designs, Crochet, Free Patterns, Kids & Toys

This amigurumi spaghetti and meatball was a design that a friend challenged me to make, and how could I resist? I met Jake Kenyon of Is That Ken Yarn when I went up to Rhinebeck, NY for the NY Sheep and Wool Festival in October. I was just contemplating this crazy idea of an amigurumi advent calendar at the time, and his excitement really helped me get motivated to make it work. He said he always wanted to see a spaghetti and meatballs amigurumi and asked if I could include that design in the 25 amigurumis I was making. I almost had to stop talking to him because my mind immediately started to spin on how to make this work! Jake had asked for the design to be heavy on the meatball, and I’m so happy with how this one turned out!

There’s 4 main parts to this design, as you can see from the photo. Of course, the main ‘course’ is the meatball, which has the eyes and mouth of the amigurumi. On top of the meatball is the marinara sauce, and underneath is a bed of spaghetti noodles. The noodles themselves are loosely attached to the meatball, so I needed a plate to contain it all, and that’s the last piece. The sauce, meatball and plate are made separately and then attached, while the noodles are attached as you make them.

Let’s break this down a bit more.

The meatball is a similar design to the Amigurumi Persimmon. It’s just a round, squat ball worked in continuous rounds, with eyes added at the half-way mark. You can check out the Amigurumi Persimmon video tutorial on tips and techniques to make the meatball.

The sauce on top and plate on the bottom are simple crocheted circles worked in seamed rounds. I added a few shells and decorative elements to the sauce to give it a more random shape like a spoonful of sauce, and it can be attached to the meatball any way you’d like.

My favorite part about this design is the spaghetti noodles. Jake specifically wanted loose noodles, so he could “drape it over the meatball”. I thought that was such a fun idea and really wanted to give the noodles a lot of flexibility. So, the noodles are long strings of chains attached to the bottom of the meatball at about the half-way point in the noodle. It’s almost like I made an octopus with a meatball head and spaghetti arms!

Once everything is sewn together, you can arrange the noodles any way you’d like on the little plate – drape it over the meatball, have the meatball sit tucked in among a pile of noodles, or have the noodles even spill off the plate!

The video below assumes that you can follow the written pattern to create the 3 major pieces – the meatball, sauce and plate. Then I show you how to make and attach the noodles and assemble the whole dish. I really hope you like this design as much as I do!
