Here’s the second of my DIY fair isle Christmas ornaments – the Fair Isle Evergreen Christmas Ornament. I hope you like it!
As with the Fair Isle Snowflake ornament, I used Lion Brand’s LB Collection Superwash Merino in Cherry and Ivory. I carry the yarn with me, but left it loose in the back so as to keep the design clear. Even so, there were places where the design gets a big muddied. I haven’t figured out how to make it better. I’ve also noticed that the tree tends to lean a little bit, due to the slant of the stitches. That mostly went away when I overstuffed the ornament.
I used Planet June’s No-cut method to join each round, instead of work in spirals, and the loose cluster fiberfill from Joann instead of normal polyester fiberfill. Check out my previous post for the Fair Isle Snowflake ornament for more details and pictures!
Supplies
- 1 skein each of Lion Brand LB Collection Superwash Merino in Cherry and Ivory
- Size D/3.25mm Clover USA Amour crochet hook
- tapestry needle
- scissors
- cluster fiberfill
Abbreviations
- sl st – slip stitch
- ch – chain stitch
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- sc2tog – single crochet decrease, worked over 2 stitches
Pattern Notes
- When changing colors, pull up the new color as the last step of the previous stitch.
- The notation below is written in a bit of a shorthand. So, “work 6 sc in red” means to work 1 sc in each of the next 6 stitches in red, etc.
- I find it easier to use Planet June’s No-cut method to join my rounds in this project. You can see it in this invisible stripes post, where I switch colors at the chain stitch.
- Extra yarn is carried throughout the project, but left loose in the back and not worked into the stitches themselves.
